Playoff exit: Maine South too strong for OPRF football
Hawks' strong attack down Huskies 34-21; footballers end season at 9-2 · 11/09/2013

9-2         TBD

At home on Saturday afternoon, the Huskies met a rolling Maine South Hawks team that arrived at Oak Park Stadium on an 8-game winning streak. Maine South was the veteran squad: persistent postseason success in their pocket. The Huskies were the up-and-comers: the new, talented team quickly moving up the ladder to success. On this windy November day, our neighbors to the north successfully executed a balanced attack of runs and passes that proved too much for the Orange & Blue. Maine South advanced with a 13-point victory.

Despite all of this, it was a very good season. The Huskies won eight regular season games. They reached the second round of the playoffs for the second straight year. They played "Huskie Style." In addition, many of our wrestlers starred both consistently and in spots.

No R & R for many | As it turns out, this Monday is the first day of the IHSA practice season. Football and wrestling go together like peanut butter and jelly (I would say peanut butter and chocolate, but apparently I'm the only person in the world that avoids this treat...), so you will see a great deal of the gridiron knights moving inside to the mighty mat. The kickoffs continue on November 26, when the season begins its flight at Downers Grove North.

Program notes: Casino Night (tonight! Sun), Nuway results, IHSA
Only 8 days before IHSA practice, 23 days until the first competition · 11/03/2013

High stakes for a high cause | Here's a great way to support the Huskie Wrestling Family: tonight, Sunday, there will be a Casino Night at Skrine Chops (7230 Madison) in Forest Park. This event takes place from 6 - 10 pm. You play CRAPS, BLACKJACK, and HOLD 'EM for real money! Come on out!

IHSA "prep"-aration | Monday, November 11, is the first day the IHSA allows for in-season IHSA practice. In order to be eligible, your wrestler needs to have a physical and be registered for the season, all by November 8. Please be sure to take care of these items. Those will-be wrestlers on the football, team, are excluded from this deadline. Keep tearing up the gridiron, boys!

Sea of preseason success | The Nuway SW Kickoff Classic took place on October 26-27, and our gentlemen did quite well for themselves. "The Huskies would have certainly won the team title if they were totaling it." - Mike Powell. On the High School Elite level, Huskies tallied one of each of the top four places. Below are full club results, but note that not all wrestlers are OPRF students:

Jolt the bolt: Huskies cruise over Dundee-Crown 35-13
OPRF's lightning attack will next host Maine South · 11/02/2013

For the second consecutive year, our OPRF Huskies have reached the second round in the IHSA 8A Football Playoffs. This time, the offensive big three (QB Lloyd Yates, RB Jamal Baggett, WR Simmie Cobbs) ran all over the Dundee-Crown Chargers en route to a 35-13 opening round victory at Oak Park Stadium.

This weekend, the Huskies will face Maine South in the second round (likely Friday night). The Hawks advanced after a 56-20 victory over Niles West. The Huskies are the #4-seed in the top bracket; the Hawks are the #5-seed.

High School Cube likely will broadcast if you can't come out. They did broadcast Friday night's matchup. Highlights (not the full game) are available.

Come on out to support the Orange & Blue Football Crew!

Here is the full second round schedule in the 8A playoffs (time and location TBD):

Drive for 5: Quintet of playoff wins to net 8A title
Round One: Dundee-Crown at OPRF, Friday, Nov. 1 @ 7:30 pm · 10/28/2013

The second season begins this Friday -- under the lights at Oak Park Stadium. At 7:30 pm, the Chargers of Dundee-Crown will vault from Carpentersville, IL, into the waiting Huskie Den of ferocity. Come out to support the Orange & Blue in the first step of the postseason gridiron grind.

If the Huskies win, their next opponent will be the winner of #12-seed Niles West at #5-seed Maine South. This game will take place in Park Ridge on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.

I am still searching for the video offering for Friday night's OPRF-DC clash, but my hunch is that High School Cube or IHSA.tv will broadcast.

Let's go Huskies! Keep it rolling!

Mustangs stung: Huskies' quick start propels squad to 8A playoffs
OPRF blasts Morton 41-6, to host Dundee-Crown (5-4) this weekend · 10/26/2013

For the Mustangs (1-8), it would prove to be a long night. The Huskies opened to a 34-0 lead and rolled to their eighth win in nine tries. Lloyd Yates, quarterback, was successful as a passer tossing three first half touchdowns. The Orange & Blue Football Crew now will battle in the Class 8A postseason for the second straight year. At Oak Park Stadium, they will take on the Dundee-Crown Chargers. These Chargers haven't made the playoffs since 1994. In fact, they are the only 8A playoff team not to have last made the playoffs in 2012 or 2011.

If the Huskies advance, they will face the winner of (12) Niles West at (5) Maine South. The Huskies are a 4 seed, so if they and the Hawks advance, the Huskies will also host round two. However, if my knowledge of hosting rules is true, if the Wolves win, then Niles West would host. Here's the breakdown (as previously true): if the combating teams host the same number of times, then the higher seed will host. If one of the playoff teams has hosted less games this postseason, then that team will host. So, if the Niles West Wolves win, they haven't hosted. The Huskies have. Therefore, Niles West will host round two.

First things first: the Huskies will take on the Chargers of Dundee-Crown. Start date and time will be released early next week. Let's go Huskies!

Several Huskies to wrestle this weekend in Las Vegas · 10/23/2013

Late October and early November is the time for premiere preseason (we call these pre-pre's -- no, not really!) tournaments. The 2013 Southwest Kickoff Classic (a.k.a. The Freak Show) is up this weekend. Action will begin on Saturday and continue into Sunday. You can follow all of the action of the SW.K.C. on TrackWrestling.

Team name "OPRF" is sending many entrants. Additionally, some individuals (non-OPRF students) are traveling with the team. This list may be modified prior to the tournament, and note that many wrestlers are participating on the OPRF football team. The IHSA football finals take place on Thanksgiving weekend -- the same week of the beginning of the wrestling duals and tournaments.

Great 8: Huskies set sights on 8 regular season football wins
7-1 Huskies to visit Morton Friday night · 10/23/2013

It's only October, and Huskiemania is running wild. Yes, OPRF fell to the iron strong Hilltoppers of Glenbard West, but they are otherwise undefeated. It is of note that Glenbard West is in the 7A classification (Huskies are in 8A, the largest). A Friday night, 7:30 pm date with the Morton Mustangs is the only thing standing in the way of a very high seed come playoff time.

Gridiron giddiness: Yates and co. 5-0, host tough Hilltoppers Fri.
Domination over the Dukes guarantee winning regular season · 09/27/2013

On Friday, OPRF Football once again showed that this year, there are precious few conference teams that an run with them on the field. The Huskie victory was a strong one, 41-13.

There are several OPRF wrestlers (previous and soon-to-be) on the squad, and heavyweight Adam Lemke-Bell is a big reason for the Huskie success. A litter of other wrestlers make their mark, on both sides of the ball.

This Friday, October 4, will have a HUGE battle of top conference teams. The Glenbard West Hilltoppers come calling at Oak Park Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 pm. Every game counts, but this matchup could determine the Silver champion.

Come to 201 N. Scoville. If you can't come (hey, sometimes you can't), you can watch live or archived on High School Cube. Keep rollin, Huskies!

Footballers 4-0, defeat Trojans in OT
Read, watch highlights · 09/20/2013

It was a double-defensive effort, but the Huskies prevailed over the Downers Grove North Trojans by way of a Lloyd Yates Overtime touchdown run. It gave the Huskies (4-0, 2-0 in conference) a hard fought, exciting win. By the way, didn't I encourage you to attend this game?? =)

You can relive this victory in many ways: highlights on Comcast Sports Net (did they say "Panthers?"), article on the Wednesday Journal, or a full replay on High School Cube.

Next Friday, the Huskies travel to York where both teams will put up their "Dukes."

Football Huskies roll through first 3 games, host DGN Friday
Highly ranked Trojans come calling at 7:30 pm this Friday · 09/19/2013

OPRF 2013 Varsity Team Picture (from il.8to18.com/oprf)

It appears that the Huskies have struck gold with their "new" football head coach, John Hoerster. After a playoff appearance and victory, the Orange & Blue Football Crew have dominated their first three opponents and have visions of competing for a difficult West Suburban Silver Conference title. However, a tough Week 4 visit by Downers Grove North will test this goal. The Trojans are 2-1 on the year. Their only loss was to conference foe Glenbard West -- who, at the time, was ranked below this purple power.

Several wrestling Huskies are on OPRF's squad, which is all the more reason to make the quick trip to 201 N. Scoville. Come out to support the Huskies, and cheer them on to keep the 2013 campaign's train rolling downhill.

IHSA Football Week 4:  Downers Grove North (2-1) visits Oak Park-River Forest (3-0) on Fri., Sep. 20, at 7:30 pm

Bake and rake: Huskie fundraiser just plain fun

The OPRF Wrestling Family held a fantastic bake sale at the Oak Park Farmer's Market. (Click to enlarge.)

All in all, over $1100 was raised on the afternoon. Congratulations to everyone for working their tails off, and we also thank everyone for sampling (and savoring, no doubt!) the delicious offerings at the Oak Park Farmer's Market.

Summer sizzle: "Oak Park bark" is heard loud and clear
Results, experience, growth point to another strong IHSA campaign · 07/23/2013

As we slowly (very slowly for all of you summer enthusiasts) approach the end of July, let's take a look back at the white hot action and accomplishments of the orange and blue Huskie crew.

Elevate the state | In May, the Illinois state championships are held in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle. As you'd expect, several attendees competed (and did quite well) from a high school located at 201 N. Scoville. The top two in each high school group qualifies for Fargo, with another spot open at the Illinois Second Chance qualifier. Look below for team results. OPRF wrestled (with some wrestlers from other schools) as "10FO WC." Also, view "Oak Park" and "Little Huskies Wrestling Club."

Full results: IL Freestyle State | IL Greco State | IL Second Chance Fargo Qualifier

Up in Curby's Cup | Lyons Township High School hosted the Curby Cup international dual event on May 11. This is a Greco-Roman event. Ellis Coleman (OPRF '09) competed in three 66 kg matches as the US faced Hungary, Serbia, and Lithuania. You may remember that Ellis qualified and represented the U.S. in the 2012 Olympics 60 kg Greco-Roman tournament.

FILA-ing good | Ending on May 26, the FILA Cadet Nationals took place. Larry Early, 63 kg, took 2nd place in Greco. Adam Lemke-Bell placed 4th at 125 Greco. In the Freestyle tilt, Larry Early placed 4th place, and Adam Lemke-Bell left the building as the FILA Cadet Freestyle national champion! On June 23, Sam Brooks (OPRF '12) polished off a FILA Junior World Team championship at 84 kg in Freestyle. Congratulations, gentlemen! FILA Cadet and FILA Junior are not the same as USAW Cadet and USAW Junior, per age eligibility.

Kings of the duals | Every June, the best lineups in each state butt heads at the national dual team tournament. Matchups include one state versus one state (in the past, occasionally one state has entered two teams), and the very best from top to bottom is crowned national champion. In the Cadet Duals, Team Illinois was matched by none as they flew to double titles in Greco and Freestyle. A few weeks later, the Junior Duals squad matched the feat. Team Illinois is on a roll, folks. Adding the the success, Team Illinois previously took the Freestyle title at and the runner-up of the Greco title at the Schoolboy Duals.

Many OPRF wrestlers competed in the the Cadet and Junior Duals. For a list with results, visit our Wall of Fame page:

Opponent Fargo-doom | The Fargo Dome in North Dakota has hosted the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman and Freestyle national tournaments (Cadet and Junior) for several years. Twelve members of the 2012-2013 OPRF Huskies competed at Fargo in a combined eighteen tournaments (six double competed in both Greco and Freestyle). Of these eighteen competitions, Huskies secured twelve All-American medals (top 8). Two more Huskies qualified for Junior nationals (in both Greco and Freestyle). Of these wrestlers, only two graduated this past school year: Zach Pickering (competed) and Darius Henry (qualified). For more detailed information, look below at the event summary.

How long until the IHSA season? | 111 days until the first IHSA practice (Nov. 11) and 126 days until the first competition (Nov. 26). Browse the IHSA Wrestling 5-year Season Calendar and the tentative OPRF Varsity Wrestling 2013-2014 schedule.

Fargo frenzy: Huskies pile on All-America medals at nationals
Cadet squad looks strong as Huskies net four titles; 12 AA's · 07/20/2013

USA Wrestling hosts Greco and Freestyle | Fargo, North Dakota, has been the mainstay for July wrestling that includes Cadet and Junior members of Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. It is where mettle and skill are tested, and he (or she) who flexes the last muscle stands the highest on the podium. This year's tournament is nearly complete, with the Junior Freestyle medal round to be wrestled on Saturday.

Youngsters are growing up just fine | OPRF boasted several wrestlers in all four male competitions, Cadet Greco & Freestyle and Junior Greco & Freestyle.

Cadet Greco - Gabriel Townsell (120 - National Champion), Larry Early (138 - National Champion), Andrew Borgdorff (152), Max Metzgar (152), Kamal Bey (160 - 3rd), Allen Stallings (195), Adam Lemke-Bell (285 - 8th) / Qualified but did not wrestle was SaVonne Bennette

Junior Greco - Johnny Gahagan (138), Zach Pickering (152 - 6th), Davonte Mahomes (160 - National Champion) / Qualified but did not wrestle were Darius Henry and Andre Lee

Junior Freestyle - Davonte Mahomes (160 - 2nd) / Qualified but did not wrestle were Darius Henry and Andre Lee

There were remarkable achievements by rising sophomores Gabriel Townsell, Isaiah White, Kamal Bey, and Allen Stallings. Folks, watch these four (and so many more) for the next three years. Adam Lemke-Bell, a first year wrestling sophomore, has really come into his own and will be a "big" force among all heavys in the state next year.

The only seniors in the participating groups are Zach Pickering and Darius Henry. Order your thrusters now so you'll be ready for the IHSA season in just 4 short months. Hey, it's almost football season! And you know what that means...it's almost wrestling season!!

Greco-wrecko: Huskies place several in state championships
Many more qualify for Fargo as team 10FO WC shines · 05/19/2013

Flexing their team muscles | Team 10FO WC is based out of OPRF. It is the offseason club with the best value for the price (disclaimer -- there is no citation for this claim...). The members performed admirably -- and in many cases -- successfully in the annual USA Wrestling Illinois State Greco-Roman Championships. The tournament was held at Lincoln-Way Central H.S. (New Lenox) on May 18-19. While not composed entirely of OPRF current and future members, team 10FO WC boasts several that have or will blaze the orange and blue.

The cream of the top | Just like the Freestyle championships, the top two finishers in the Greco tournament's Cadet and Junior division qualify for competition in the national competition in Fargo, North Dakota, later this summer. 10FO WC did quite well. The OPRF wrestlers that secured this ticket to Fargo included (this list is unofficial): Cadet - Gabe Townsell (120 - 1st), SaVonne Bennette (132 - 2nd), Larry Early (145 - 1st), Kamal Bey (160 - 1st), Allen Stallings (195 - 1st), Adam Lemke-Bell (285 - 2nd) Junior - Andre Lee (195 - 1st). In other action, Johnny Gahagan battled at the Central Regional for Freestyle but did not place. Jump to results for Illinois Greco-Roman Championships (visit team 10FO WC or Oak Park) or USAW Central Regional (visit Illinois).

It used to be held at OPRFHS, remember? | The Illinois Greco-Roman Championships were held at Oak Park & River Forest High School but recently moved to Lincoln-Way Central High School. Follow events, information, and the path to Fargo at Illinois/USA Wrestling.

Weekly words: Illinois Freestyle ends 5/5, "new" IHSA facility
05/04/2013

It's that time again: Illinois State Freestyle Tournament. Kids and young adults trek to Champaign-Urbana to compete for division and weight supremacy. This is an open tournament for any wrestler. Despite this, some brackets can be small. Yet others can be large. Don't worry; the Huskies have come in strong force once again.

This year's offseason club name is 10FO WC. Many of the wrestlers are members of the O & B Wrecking Crew, but not all wrestlers are. For a full look at the results, go to "Team Results" - "10FO WC". Good luck, wrestlers!

Official new logos for the newly named State Farm Center.

Farmers storm the assembly line | The University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) hosts the IHSA Individual State Wrestling Tournament each February. The arena is the campus's Assembly Hall. As of April 30, that name no longer exists. State Farm Insurance has partnered with the University of Illinois to rename the building "State Farm Center." This name will run for 30 years (at a $60 million price tag). Come February 2014, thousands of fans won't be flocking to Assembly Hall, they will be huddled inside the State Farm Center. If I may say so, the new logos are spectacular. You really can't go wrong with orange and blue, I tell ya!

Going west, but always north | Roy Nyberg, 1997 wrestling captain and graduate of OPRF, is a coach at Beverly Hills High School in California. Before coaching in Beverly Hills, Roy attended and was a four-year wrestler at the University of Pennsylvania. Congratulations on your achievements, Roy, and best wishes to your program!
